The Royal Philatelic Collection was started by Edward Vll's brother, Prince Alfred. Alfred, who was always short of cash, sold it to Edward Vll, who gave it to his son George - later George V. By the time George V ascended the throne in 1910, the Royal Philatelic Collection was probably the most important and valuable collection in the world. However the Royal family has been very secretive about the collection, so it's not always easy to find out what it contains, how much was sold and how the contents was obtained. Jack Shamash has written one of the leading books about the collection and has also made a long term study of it.
